Real Girls Wear Pink and Drive 4 Wheelers

Summer Portraits

One of my best friends Heather is a professional photographer in the Southern KC metro area. Let me know if you would like her contact info. She specializes in children and families. Isn't she amazing? We have our kids portraits done every 6 months because as the saying goes, they grow up too fast. (By the way, two of the monkeys in the previous post are hers).

Five Little Monkeys

When I got home from my run this morning, there were 5 little girls chowing down on french toast. Thank you Daddy! (Ava and Amber spent the night with us last night. The girls had a giggling fun time).

Baking with Agave Nectar

I have to share about this really great new find at the grocery store, agave nectar. It is a natural sweetener that has the same calories as sugar, but you use much less of it because it is sweeter than sugar. I always hesitate to use artificial sweeteners, especially for things my kids eat (we don't need any cancer-causing agents in our food). So I was excited when I found this substitue- lower calories for me, but okay for my family.

So far I have used it to sweeten: our smoothies, my steel-cut oatmeal and white-wine sangria (super-yum). This was my first time baking with it. I used this recipe Banana Oatmeal Chip Cookies. Super star ingredients include: ground flaxseed meal, banana, soy milk, agave nectar, whole wheat flour, oats, walnuts, and canola oil.
The finished product. The kids gobbled them up. Hehe, I love it when they think they are eating just a cookie, but it is really health food, disguised with some chocolate chips!

Aliah's Zoo Party

Aliah celebrated her 6th birthday with her friends at the Topeka Zoo and Gage Park. There is a particular tree there right by the elephants that Aliah loves to climb, so that was the draw for her party. Most people take their kids to the zoo to see elephants and tigers. I take my kids to see a tree (see above). But we really did see the animals too:
While we were there, we stopped by the Rainforest. Anabelle was afraid of the flamingo:
Just kidding, she really is brave (and maybe a tiny bit cocky):
Now bats the size of a small dog, that is something to be afraid of:Hanging out with the gorillas:
Aliah really wanted her beloved babysitter April to come to her party:
Riding the train across the street from the zoo:
We accounted for about 75% of the train's riders:The train has been in operation for 43 years. Riding it is one of my favorite childhood memories. The sweet conductor announced Aliah's birthday and had her stand up while the whole train sang to her.
Fast train, just kidding! It was a leaisurly stroll around the 160 acres of Gage park.
We finished off the day with lunch and playing in the park.

Happy Birthday to me (Aliah)

Today is my birthday, I am turning 6. I and mommy went on a date today. Mommy had to go to KU Med for her check up and since it was my birthday I got to go with her. Violet and Annabelle had to stay at Grandma's. The picture above is of me and Mommy in front of the machine (ultrasound) that checked inside Mommy's neck.
I am playing my new game Double Shuffle at the doctor's office. I got this game for my birthday this morning and it is fun. I won 3 times and Mommy only won 1 time. I am better at math than her.
The nurse let me squeeze the pump and make the circle on Mommy's arm tight. This is a picture of Mommy's doctor feeling her neck.
Mommy is getting her blood drawn to make sure that Mommy's cancer is all gone.
This is my skirt. Mommy thought it was funny when I took a picture of my skirt. You can see my shoes in this picture too.
When we were all done at the doctor's we met Daddy for lunch. I chose to go to a Mexican restaurant because that is my favorite. I got a special desert for my birthday. My favorite part was the ice cream inside. I also got pop in a huge parent cup!
